Sandy Mobilization, Assessment, Referral and Treatment for Mental Health (SMART-MH)

Sandy Mobilization, Assessment, Referral and Treatment for Mental Health (SMART-MH) focused on providing community outreach following Hurricane Sandy. This project was completed through collaboration with the New York City Department for the Aging. SMART-MH looked at the effectiveness of ENGAGE therapy, a brief talk therapy treatment designed to treat symptoms of depression in older adults. Based in senior centers, SMART-MH participants were either enrolled in ENGAGE therapy or in a comparison group. In keeping with our commitment to supporting diverse communities, services were provided in English, Spanish, Russian, and Cantonese. Data collected showed the effectiveness of screening for depression in community settings as well as the effectiveness of the ENGAGE intervention in community settings.
